Suburb Profiles
Overview
Maraylya is a charming suburb located 43 kilometers north-west of Sydney’s central business district, nestled within The Hills Shire and the City of Hawkesbury. Known for its rural atmosphere, Maraylya is bounded by Cattai Creek to the north and east, offering residents a scenic backdrop of natural beauty.
The suburb primarily consists of small-acreage properties, many of which are used as hobby farms and for recreational horsekeeping. This rural lifestyle is appealing to those looking for a peaceful retreat from the city while still having access to essential amenities. The nearby Scheyville National Park, which borders Maraylya to the south, is a popular destination for local residents, offering picturesque trails perfect for horse riding and outdoor activities. The Horseworld Sportsworld Equestrian Stadium adds to the suburb’s equestrian culture, providing facilities for both recreational and competitive riders.
While Maraylya boasts many attractive features, it is also prone to flooding, particularly in its western part, after heavy rains. The floodwaters, which result from run-off from Scheyville National Park, flow into Longneck Lagoon and eventually drain into the Hawkesbury River, located less than 2 kilometers to the west. This natural characteristic underscores the suburb’s connection to its environment and the importance of sustainable living.
In July 2020, a small section of Maraylya in the south was carved out to form the new suburb of Gables, further shaping the area’s development. Overall, Maraylya offers a unique blend of rural charm, equestrian opportunities, and a close-knit community, making it a desirable location for those seeking a tranquil lifestyle just outside the bustling city.
