Suburb Profiles
Overview
Cattai is a historic suburb located 44 kilometers north-west of Sydney’s central business district and 30 kilometers from Parramatta, situated in the local government areas of The Hills Shire and the City of Hawkesbury. Known for its rich history and scenic landscapes, Cattai is bordered by the Hawkesbury River to the north-west and is traversed by Cattai Creek.
The suburb is home to the heritage-listed Cattai Estate, which lies within the Cattai National Park at the junction of the river and creek. The estate features a Georgian house built between 1804 and 1821 by former magistrate Thomas Arndell, one of the area’s early European settlers. Additions were made to the estate in the 1860s, enhancing its historical significance.
Cattai also has a long-standing educational tradition, with its rural public primary school, founded in 1886, serving the local community for over a century. Prior to European settlement, the area was inhabited by the Darug people, the traditional custodians of the land. Cattai’s natural beauty, historical landmarks, and deep Indigenous and colonial heritage make it a distinctive and charming suburb.
Cattai has become very popular with landowners to build their acreage dreams, as there are options for purchasing large and small lots. With close proximity to the Hawkesbury River, Cattai has become very popular with water ski enthusiasts.
